January is the coldest month of the year in Central Montenegro, and the average temperature is just a few degrees above zero in Celsius or in the mid-30s in Fahrenheit. The sunshine lasts about 4 hours per day. It’s rather dark and cold, and strong cold winds blow over the inland part of the country adding chilliness. The mountainous region enjoys some snowfall in January. Kolašin and Žabljak offer skiing and snowboarding at that time. It rains or snows for about 7-10 days times in the mountains. However, road closures due to snow and ice are possible. Meanwhile, the coast and the lowlands don’t see much snow. The coastal region is still rather gloomy in January with short wet and cloudy days. The shortest days usually fall on early January. It rains a bit less than in December though, and the temperature doesn’t drop below freezing.

February is still a freezing and damp month in Central Montenegro. The average temperature is above freezing, and rain is more typical than snow. The rainfall is both heavy and regular. There is slightly more sunshine than in January: about four and a half hours per day. Towards the end of the month, it is more common to see the sun is in the sky. Montenegro mountains boast good skiing conditions in February. As most snowfall usually occurs in late January, slopes have decent snow cover by February. Also, there is more sunshine and clear skies. February is also the windiest month in Kolašin, Žabljak, and other ski resorts. The temperature is often below freezing during the night. On the coast, February is still a gloomy off-season month with too much rain to do anything outside. The sky is often covered with grey clouds, days get a bit longer, but sunshine is still a rare gift. The temperature gets slightly warmer but still rather winterish below. You will still need a water-resistant coat, gloves and a hat to feel comfortable outside for a long time on most days. And of course, make sure you pack an umbrella.

The beginning of March still feels like winter in inland Montenegro. Even though day temperature can raise to 15°C (59°F), it is falling back to just above freezing at night. Sunny days become more common with about 5 hours of sunshine each day. But there are still 10-13 rainy days during this month. Wildflowers start to bloom, and it’s possible to plan hiking trips in the Podgorica area. However, the mountains are still covered with snow in March. As the temperature gets warmer and sunny days are more frequent, it is still a pretty good time to hit the slopes in Kolašin, Žabljak, and other ski resorts. With more hours of sunshine in March, coastal Montenegro is shaking off its winter gloom. March is less wet comparing to February, but it still rains rather often. March is one of the rainiest months on the coast. The temperature is a few degrees warmer so, overall, it gets more comfortable to be outside.

April weather is quite capricious and unpredictable in Montenegro. Even though it’s time when you can enjoy a coffee in an outdoor cafe enjoying the sun again, sudden cold waves and rainy days are also possible. The average temperature in Podgorica gets quite comfortable, and you could typically see about 8 rainy days per month. In the mountains, April is a beautiful time! By the end of the month, the snow will be gone pretty much everywhere. Wildflowers are blooming, and mountain rivers get the most volume from melting snows. It’s time to see the waterfalls and plan some hiking. But mind that the nights can still get rather cold. In the coastal area, the temperature is a few degrees higher than in March, and hotels and businesses prepare for the new tourist season in full swing. It’s a nice time to go for a hike and enjoy the views of blooming flowers and fruit trees. However, don’t forget to take an umbrella and a light jacket because the April weather is full of surprises. The rivers are full of rushing water promising thrilling rafting activities. In the mountains, May is a great time for hiking and camping. However, you must watch out for frequent afternoon thunderstorms with lightning. They become regular in May and June. On the coast, May starts to feel a lot like summer. First beachgoers rush to open the season enjoying about 8 hours of sunshine. But the see is still too cool to swim comfortably. Chances of rain are rather low at this time, although May has about 9 rainy days on the average. Warm winds from the Adriatic Sea, bring southern currents. Pleasant breeze from the south or south-western dominates the weather ensuring warm and sunny days that are slowly getting hotter.

June is a great month to get a bargain deal for a vacation on Montenegro’s Adriatic Coast. The vast sandy beaches from Herceg Novi to Ulcinj are warm and full of sun, but still [pleasantly uncrowded. The last summer month is as hot as July in Montenegro. The heat is especially intense in Podgorica and the central part of the country. Early fall is a charming time in all of Montenegro. September is wonderful in Podgorica as the heat backs off and the autumn season arrives. The humidity raises due to increased rainfall. There are seven rainy days this month. The days are still predominantly clear with over 8 hours of sunshine. Temperatures are mellowly staying in the comfortable range below 30°C (89°F). 12-hour days are great for outdoor activities and fall foliage watching, as autumn colors the mountains and valleys in golden shades. This is the last month of the dry season when hiking and walking are the best. On the coast, September still feels like summer. Sea bays are still warm for swimming and the days are sunny and wonderful. The nights get a bit cooler with temperatures dropping to 14°C (59 F), so make sure to take a sweater or a light jacket with you.
