A number of capital cities across the world boast rivers that flow right across the downtown. Yet, usually, you can only cruise along these waterways—a vast majority are too polluted for swimming, but not in Copenhagen! The city is blessed with a system of pure canals, even in the very downtown, where they wash the Danish Parliament Buildings called Christiansborg. Taking place annually in late August, Copenhagen Swim is a unique occasion to swim around the Parliament along with hundreds of fellow swimmers in a 2-kilometer race.
The fact that it's a competition indicates that you probably won't have extra time to observe urban architecture. All the same, you'll surely be able to take a close-up glimpse of the Parliament from quite an unusual angle. The Danish name "Christiansborg Rundt" literally means "to swim around the Parliament."
Schedule of Events
On Friday, August 30th, the aquatic festivities kick off with the 2000-meter swim at 4:40 pm, featuring a rolling start for participants. Throughout the day, various distances will be available to cater to swimmers of all levels. The day culminates with the TrygFonden Christiansborg Rundt By Night swim, spanning 2000 meters and running until 7:55 pm. On Saturday, August 31st, the excitement continues from 9 am to 3:30 pm, with a range of distances to choose from.
The Route
The swim course begins and ends with The Black Diamond at Søren Kierkegaards Plads. Starting from a floating pontoon, swimmers embark on a counterclockwise route along the harborfront, passing landmarks like Knippelsbro, Børsen, and Christiansborg Castle. Continuing through canals under bridges and past iconic sites, including Agnete and Havmanden sculptures, the route winds up Frederiksholm's Canal. Spectators line the finish at Den Sorte Diamant, where swimmers climb a small flight of stairs to register their finish. Spotters and lifeguards ensure safety throughout, with REMA 1000 and Krüger Relay offering alternative distances and starting points.
Registration
Participants aged fifteen and above are invited to register for the event, which occurs annually in late August. Although the competition takes place at the end of summer, registration typically opens as early as November of the previous year. Remarkably, individuals can even decide to participate on the day of the event itself. However, those who register early can take advantage of discounted ticket prices, ranging from 325 to 1100 Danish Kroner, depending on the length of the race.
