San Diego Pride, an annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, is set to take place in July 2024. It offers an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to come together in celebration of diversity, inclusion, and resilience. Whether marching in the parade, enjoying the festival's entertainment, or participating in community events, Pride Week in San Diego promises a memorable and meaningful experience for all who attend.

She Fest (July 13)

One noteworthy component of the Pride festivities is She Fest, an event dedicated to empowering and centering LGBTQ+ women and non-binary individuals. This inclusive gathering serves as a platform for connecting small LGBTQ+ businesses with new audiences, fostering social connections, and celebrating volunteer leadership within the community. The flagship She Fest event kicks off San Diego'sDiego's Pride week with a diverse array of programming, attracting over 4,000 community members.

The Pride Parade (July 20)

The largest single-day civic event in the region is a colorful extravaganza that attracts over 300,000 spectators. Participants march through Hillcrest, showcasing elaborate floats and exuberant performances that honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community. The parade kicks off at 10 am from the Hillcrest Pride Flag and follows a route through the heart of the neighborhood.

Special Contingents

San Diego Pride's Special Contingents bring vibrant diversity to the parade. The Military Department honors LGBTQ service members and allies, while the Youth Marching Band showcases musical talent and promotes leadership among LGBTQ youth. The Motorcycle Contingent adds excitement, leading the parade in a cherished tradition. These contingents embody the community's resilience and unity, enriching the celebration.

The Pride Festival (July 20 and 21)

Following the parade, the revelry continues with a two-day festival at Marston Point in Balboa Park. It features many activities and entertainment options, including performers, interactive exhibits, cultural presentations across four stages, community resources, and numerous vendor booths.

Ticket options

Regular tickets for the Pride Festival are available online until July 19, offering a Weekend Pass at $38 for general access and VIP access for $219, providing exclusive perks such as branded credentials, access to an expanded VIP lounge, upgraded restrooms, and catered food. Last-minute tickets can be purchased at the box office during Pride Weekend, with Weekend Passes priced at $42. Also, high-school-aged youth and younger attendees can enjoy free admission at the box office. At the same time, seniors 65 and above can obtain tickets for $15.

Additional Events

In addition to the parade and festival, San Diego Pride Week features several other notable events, including the Light Up the Cathedral ceremony at St.Paul's Episcopal Cathedral on July 17 and the Spirit of Stonewall Rally on July 19. The Spirit of Stonewall Rally serves as a poignant reminder of the community's origins, honoring leaders who have made significant contributions to LGBTQ+ activism and advocacy.

Logistics

For transportation and parking, attendees can utilize official shuttles, ride-sharing services, or public transportation options provided by San Diego Pride. Biking or scootering to the festival and parking at the designated corral on Balboa Dr. and El Prado is also an option. Visitors can enjoy free parking at the Old Naval Hospital and hop on the complimentary shuttle to the parade and festival. ADA-accessible vans are available upon request, ensuring accessibility for all attendees. Continuous shuttle services run throughout the weekend, complemented by public transportation options via the PRONTO app.

History

Established in 1974, this event holds historical significance, stemming from the first Lesbian and Gay Parade organized to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant cultural phenomenon, fostering pride, equality, and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, locally, nationally, and globally.
