For two days in August, the small Wallonian town of Bouillon turns into a time machine. Knights and artisans, troubadours and falconers, and dozens of other characters gather at the foot of the Bouillon Castle (Château fort SI Bouillon) to re-create a typical medieval setting.
Artisan Market
The Medieval Festival of Bouillon (Fête Médiévale de Bouillon) features medieval camps inside and outside the castle. Artisan stalls span three locations—on the castle esplanade, on the site of the Sepulcrines, and near Pont de la Poulie. Anyone can try medieval food and drinks, like mead, and shop for leather goods, jewelry, and medieval costumes, as well as discover crafts. Blacksmiths, potters, and other local and visiting artisans show their mastery and sell their goods. It is also possible to join the hunt or practice using weaponry (such as a crossbow). Activities at the festival run from 10 am to 8 pm.
Entertainment Program
Inside the castle walls, entertainment includes shows by medieval troupes that repel invaders and guard the castle. Visitors can also see falconry shows, musical performances, and much more.
On the streets of Boullion, entertainment starts at 2 pm. The parade of knights, Vikings, minstrels, and other characters leaves from Pont de la Poulie (Cordemois Bridge) at 3:30 pm. The colorful cortege passes through the town to the sounds of lutes and drums. On Saturday evening, mini-concerts take place at various locations, like Pont de la Poulie, Grand’Rue, and on the site of the Sepulcrines. The Saturday program ends in Sepulcrines Park. The main highlight of the festival —an enchanting fire show—takes place after dark.
Tickets
The Medieval Festival of Bouillon offers free access to the artisan market and the medieval camp. The animation in town is also free. Visitors can buy the Medieval Pass to attend shows and concerts. The pass costs €20 for adults and €15 for children & students. Kids under four don't need a ticket.
Bouillon Castle
The castle dates back to the 8th century and is an atmospheric venue to host such an event. During the first crusade of 1096, the castle was used by Godfrey of Bouillon to finance his expedition to the Holy Land. The medieval architectural gem is set on three rocky peaks, towering over the Semois River. One of the largest in Belgium, the fortified castle boasts a maze of corridors and large vaulted rooms. Medieval Festival days bring together the entire town. With less than 6,000 inhabitants, Bouillon is quite small but quite ready to entertain fans of the Middle Ages history.
