Southern Decadence Festival is often the first thing you hear about when asking for things to do during New Orleans Labor Day Weekend. However, you'll discover that there are many other wonderful activities available both in and near NOLA during this long weekend.

City Park

With tons of family fun, New Orleans City Park wins the hearts of many. It has something to offer for everyone year-round and is also the perfect place to celebrate Labor Day Weekend. Come and explore 1300 ac (526 ha) of recreation and attractions. Check out the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, the Botanical Garden, the Bayou Oaks golf course, and so much more.

Cool Zoo

Cool Zoo is a kids' area in the Audubon Zoo and a beloved summer destination for locals. While it typically closes on Mondays, Labor Day is a special exception when its doors are open to visitors. Families come to splash around on the water slides, unwind on a lazy river, and have fun with water cannons. Also, be sure to take your time exploring Uptown and the rest of the Audubon Zoo.

Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff (August 31, 2024)

Prepare to kick off the 2024 college football season with the Sugar Bowl Country Kickoff, electrifying music and entertainment extravaganza. Taking place on August 31, the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, at the iconic Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, this event promises a night to remember.

Leading the lineup is none other than the powerhouse hit-maker Eric Church, set to headline the show. Joining him are a stellar cast of performers, including multi-platinum sensation Thomas Rhett, award-winning artist Jon Pardi, and the unparalleled talent of Ashley McBryde. Tickets range from $55 to $999+.

Honey Island Swamp

If you're into a day trip, the Honey Island Swamp is a great destination. The area boasts unique flora and fauna and is best discovered on a swamp tour. You'll encounter alligators, snakes, wild boars, raccoons, owls, and egrets, all just a few feet off your boat. Pickup services are offered from a various range of French Quarter hotels. But you can also drive there yourself. The swamp is only 35 mi (56 km) from NOLA. You'll find several tour operators offering both day and night tour options.

Southern Decadence (unconfirmed in 2024)

This iconic gay event runs for six days and nights and features a diverse program, including concerts, parties, and after-parties, typically hosted by favored LGBTQ bars. The peak of the celebration falls on Sunday, when the Southern Decadence Parade floods the French Quarter. The colorful street extravaganza kicks off at 2 pm. While some street parties offer free admission, others require weekend passes.
