The vibrant coastal city in southeast Virginia is a nice destination for your 4th of July weekend. You can find a number of options to enjoy with your whole family, namely free live entertainment and fireworks. The most popular gathering points within the VA Beach include the Oceanfront and Mount Trashmore Park. But you can also hit the road and celebrate Independence Day in the neighboring Norfolk or a bit further in Hampton.
Stars & Stripes Celebration on VB Oceanfront (July 4, 2024)
Everyone's favorite place to salute American freedom in Virginia Beach is the Oceanfront, holding the Stars & Stripes Celebration. It features live music, classical and patriotic, on multiple stages on the beach, namely at 17th Street Park, 24th Street Park, and sometimes Neptune's Park on 31st Street. The concerts run from 7 pm to 11 pm. Still, the greatest crowd-pleaser remains fireworks, launched at 9:30 from the very same 24th Street and the Broadwalk. All entertainment is free and open to the public.
July 4th Celebration at Mount Trashmore Park (July 4, 2024, TBA)
A great inland alternative to Stars & Stripes is presented by Mount Trashmore Park, hosting a family-friendly celebration, likewise free of charge. Enjoy live music and an eye-catching firework display, starting at 9:30 pm. Bring your blanket and take a convenient spot on a giant grassy hill. If you need snacks and refreshments, grab some from local food vendors before the show.
Independence Day 5K (July 4, 2024)
Another way to celebrate is to dress in red, white, and blue and join the annual 5K run or walk on 4441 South Boulevard at 9:30 am. The ticket costs $35. You can also opt for the free 1/4 mile tot trot or the virtual 5K run, which is $35, like the ordinary race. By participating in this event, you will support the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign, funding summer camp, child care, and other programs.
4th of July Great American Picnic & Fireworks in Norfolk (July 4, 2024)
If you don't mind going outside VA Beach, consider Norfolk, only 18 miles (29 km) west of Neptune City. Check out the annual 4th of July Great American Picnic & Fireworks festival at Town Point Park. This free kid-friendly event offers a fun-packed program from 5 pm to 10 pm, with the main highlight traditionally being a pyrotechnic display above the Elizabeth River at 9:30 pm.
4th of July Fireworks in Hampton (July 4, 2024)
A bit further, 30 miles (48 km) away from Virginia Beach, you can also experience the 4th of July in Hampton. Local festivities include backyard picnics, a freedom run, some live entertainment, and, most importantly, fireworks going off along the coastline. Check out Buckroe Beach and Park for one of the most winning viewpoints.
