Qué esperar
Primero, puedes ver o participar en el famoso Desfile con decenas de miles de participantes disfrazados marchando por el centro de la ciudad. The Basel Fasnacht lasts for three days and begins on the Monday after Ash Wednesday. For many 'Baslers' and for those who participate in costume during Fasnacht, the three days are some of the nicest of the year and a definite high point. In 2025, the Carnival dates are from March 10 to March 12.
The Carnival in Basel, known as Switzerland's largest "carnival" and the world's most prominent Protestant one, carries a history shrouded in mystery. Much of its early documentation was lost in the catastrophic earthquake of 1356, leaving its origins obscured. The earliest surviving record of the Basel Carnival dates back to 1376.
As with many carnival traditions, the roots of Basel Fasnacht can be traced to ancient Celtic and Germanic practices, including ancestor worship, fertility rituals, and ceremonies to drive away winter. Over time, it absorbed influences from medieval jousts, military musters organized by the city's guilds, and pre-Lenten religious festivals.
