As Bonneville Salt Flats (Planícies de Sal de Bonneville) estão listadas entre as paisagens mais notáveis da América do Norte. É um dos pontos naturais mais visitados de Utah. Estes magníficos tapetes brancos cobrem 1.214 km quadrados e contêm 147 milhões de toneladas de sal. Apesar da enorme área e volume, a crosta salgada é bastante frágil e pode ser facilmente demolida sob a pressão de um veículo.

No inverno e na primavera, o apartamento é coberto com água, o que torna a crosta salgada mais macia e particularmente vulnerável. Portanto, os veículos não são permitidos para a área. Se quiseres atravessar os apartamentos, podes vir entre o final de Julho e Outubro. A água evapora e o vento cria uma superfície perfeitamente lisa e dura novamente. Em caso de tempestades que também ocorrem na estação seca, a área fica fechada para veículos.

Nenhuma vegetação cresce neste solo extremamente salgado e o clima aqui é desértico, crítico para animais ou plantas. Note-se que, no verão, a temperatura subiu para 40°C. No entanto, o calor também tem seus benefícios — quando fica muito quente, ondas de calor e solo salgado podem criar mirages incríveis.

O melhor lugar para ver os Salt Flats está localizado ao longo da I-80, a leste de Wendover, onde você também pode encontrar uma parada de descanso, oferecendo banheiros e água. The Bonneville Salt Flats are barren of vegetation due to their extremely high salinity and desert-like climate, which creates challenging conditions for any plants or animals to thrive. In the summer, temperatures can soar to 40°C (104°F), but the intense heat produces an extraordinary natural phenomenon: mirages. When the heat rises, light waves bend over the salty terrain, creating an optical illusion of shimmering water or a retreating lake in the distance. These captivating illusions are a visual delight, but visitors should take care to stay hydrated and protected from the harsh sun while marveling at this unique effect.

For a prime view of the Bonneville Salt Flats, head to the Salt Flats Rest Area near milepost 10. Park your vehicle and stroll onto the crunchy, salty terrain to immerse yourself in the unique landscape. Be cautious, especially in sandals, as the salt crystals can be sharp underfoot.

Another excellent vantage point is along I-80, just east of Wendover, where another rest area provides restrooms and drinking water. From here, the flats stretch endlessly to the east and south, creating a surreal, uninterrupted horizon. To the north and west, low-lying mountains punctuate the flat expanse, appearing to float above the shimmering surface—a truly mesmerizing sight.
