Sheep procession

On the Sunday morning of the Schueberfouer, known as Kiermessonndeg, musicians dressed in traditional blue smocks parade through Luxembourg City, accompanied by a shepherd and a small flock of ribbon-adorned sheep. As they collect donations, they play the Hämmelsmarsch, a beloved tune with lyrics by poet Michel Lentz. The festivities culminate in a ceremony where the mayor officially opens the fair, followed by an inaugural tour with local politicians mingling among the crowds, concluding with a platter of Kiermesham (ham) and Kiermeskuch (cake) served at the fairgrounds.

Open Hours

The Schueberfouer operates daily from 12 pm to 1 am. On the final day, visitors can enjoy half-price attractions until 8 pm, followed by a fireworks show at 10 pm on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge.

History of Schueberfouer

The Schueberfouer, established in 1340 by John I of Luxembourg, originally served as an agricultural market lasting eight days around St. Bartholomew's Day. Over the centuries, it evolved from a marketplace for livestock and goods into a major funfair. The event moved to its current location on Glacis square in 1610, and while shows and games were introduced in the 18th century, it wasn't until the early 20th century that amusement rides like the Ferris wheel became part of the fair.
