The beginning of winter is very pleasant. The weather is still not too cold, with plenty of sunshine. The north of the country can experience some snow which means the start of the highly anticipated skiing season.

In January the weather is usually dry and sunny. It’s a good time for sightseeing with comfortable temperatures around 10 °C in Tokyo and Kyoto. Don’t forget to take your warm coat though, occasional freeze and snowfalls are possible.

February is the peak of winter and the coldest month in Japan. Yet it’s also the best time for winter sports and the legendary snowy landscapes of Hokkaido and Shirakawago. Sightseeing is also possible since the weather is sunny and dry. Towards the end of the month, you can see nature waking up and ume beginning to blossom.
