Events & Activities

The Gurten Mountain offers various activities for all ages. Astronomy enthusiasts can explore the observatory, relocated from Monte Generoso, to view stars and distant galaxies. The expansive playground features attractions like a giant ball path, miniature cars, a train, and the “Gschtelasch” climbing sculpture. For thrill-seekers, the summer toboggan run offers 500 meters of downhill fun with breathtaking views of Bern and the Bernese Oberland. Most playground activities are free, and the area is enjoyable year-round for families and tourists alike.

Gurten Festival (July 16-19, 2025)

Each summer, the Gurten Festival transforms Bern’s local mountain into a hub of live music and good vibes. Since 1977, the four-day event has drawn music fans with its stellar lineup, relaxed atmosphere, and stunning views. The festival features performances on four live stages and three dance tents, offering a diverse mix of mainstream and pop music, all delivered with a focus on high-quality sound and presentation. It’s a favorite among festival-goers for its scenic setting above the Swiss capital.

Hiking & Sports

The Gurten mountain offers diverse outdoor activities for hikers, trail runners, and downhill bikers. Hikers can explore various trails, such as the easy Gurten loop or the challenging Grüenebode forest descent. Trail runners enjoy routes from the valley to the peak, where they are rewarded with views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. Downhill bikers can tackle a 2-kilometer trail with jumps and curves, accessible by bike or funicular, and available year-round. There's even a bike-washing station at the trail's end.

Winter Activities

In winter, the Gurten offers a variety of activities. Sledding enthusiasts can enjoy a thrilling six-kilometer slope through the forest, with steep and narrow sections, or opt for a gentler experience on the meadow. Skiing is also available when snow conditions are good, making the Gurten an ideal spot for beginners and children. Ski equipment can be rented on-site for five Francs, and day passes are also affordable. Waterproof clothing and safe equipment are recommended for all activities.

Transportation

Gurten can be reached on foot or via the Gurten Funicular from Wabern. This area is accessible from central Bern by tram, train, or car. The Wabern bei Bern station, served by the S3 and S31 lines of the Bern S-Bahn, is located next to the funicular's lower station, as is the Gurtenbahn stop on tram route 9.

History of Gurten

The Gurten has a rich history, originally serving as a watch post for the Burgundians and Franks in the 6th century. It later became the site of an imposing castle built by the Aegerten family. Over time, it evolved into a recreational area featuring a funicular railway, a spa hotel, and a ski jumping facility. In 1999, the Gurten was transformed into a public park, maintaining its cultural significance and offering panoramic views, dining, and leisure activities.
