Ume has a unique and sour taste to it. It is believed that Samurai used ume for boosting their energy. It is seldom eaten directly, rather used as an ingredient in various foods and beverages. One of the most popular ways to consume ume is umeboshi—very salty and sour pickled ume. You can also try a Japanese liqueur called umeshu, which is made of the unripe ume plums dipped in sugared shochu. The Japanese say it is a great drink to stimulate your appetite.
