Miami Jai-Alai

Jai alai is a variation of Basque pelota that involves a ball (pelota) bounced off a walled space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held device (cesta). Players use the cesta to catch and throw the pelota, a hard rubber ball similar in size to a baseball but harder and faster. During the game, the speed of the game can reach 186 miles per hour (300 km per hour), so the players must use protective equipment to avoid injuries. Also, the ball is changed every 15 minutes of the game because of such strong hits. Jai Alai is usually played in pairs.

In Miami, you can watch the following tournaments: Battle Court, Magic City Pelota, U.S. National Jai Alai Championship, and World Super Court. Games take place during the Spring and Fall seasons. Matches can also be watched online.

Jai Alai Game History

Jai-Alai originated in the Basque Country of Northern Spain almost four centuries ago. The term, coined by Serafin Baroja in 1875, is also often loosely applied to the fronton (the open-walled playing area) where the sport is played. Miami's Jai-alai players are some of the most skilled in America, and spectators are always in for impressive performances in Calder Casino.

This sport is played worldwide, but it is especially popular in Spain, France, the American state of Florida, and various Latin American countries. From the 1950s and onwards, the jai alai sport really boomed in Florida. The Miami Fronton underwent a significant renovation in the mid-1960s, partly to accommodate an expanded grandstand since the 7,000 seats of the old grandstand weren't enough anymore. After the renovation, the grandstand can now comfortably room over 13,000 spectators.
