The terminalia catappa tree is an ancient plant that was often used as a hiding spot for prisoners and secret messaging. Growing all over the Con Dao island, the trees produce little fruits that are usually harvested in March through September. The seed is taken out of fruit and then cleaned and roasted with sugar or salt, resulting in a tasty delicacy, often eaten in November.
