Berlin has a moderately continental type of climate, which means that winters are rather cold with temperatures around freezing. Several weather patterns prevail in German capital during this season.
Relatively warm and mild periods occur when winds come from the Atlantic. It brings rain and warm humid air with the temperature around 10 °C. When high pressure system dominates, the weather gets colder with frosts. When the fronts mix it can bring snow and freezing rain. Cold air masses coming from Siberia bring heavy snowfall and frost. , However, these cold waves rarely last for more than a couple of days.
December is the rainiest and the darkest winter month, while January and February are the coldest.
