Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead 2025 in Bolivia

Is it common in your country to celebrate this occasion with a barbeque at the cemetery?—In Bolivia it is!

Dates: October 31–November 2

Unlike in the majority of countries, where people visit the dead with deep sorrow, here in Bolivia, everything is different. On the Day of the Dead, the cemeteries are full of merry people who eat barbeque, play the guitar, and sing songs to the dead right beside the graves and crypts instead of mourning. They bring flowers and other small gifts to their ancestors and enjoy the feast.

Traditions and Rituals

On the first days of November, cemeteries across Bolivia come alive with thousands of visitors who adorn graves with flowers and offer elaborate spreads of food for the deceased. These offerings, including cake, popcorn, candy, and fruits, are meant to nourish the spirits on their journey back to the afterlife. Bread is also plentiful, often baked into symbolic shapes like angels, bulls (symbolizing prosperity), and ladders (to help the dead ascend to heaven). Bolivians traditionally spent the rest of Día de los Muertos with family at the cemetery, sharing prayers, conversations, and even smoking. Visitors, whether friends or strangers, are welcome to join in the prayers and are often rewarded with food for their kindness. The most famous celebration takes place at the cemetery of La Paz.

Music

Music, alongside prayer, is central to the day's festivities, invigorating the spirits as they prepare for their return to the underworld. Guitarists, trumpeters, and bands perform folk tunes to honor the spirits' visit and to wish them well on their journey. Once the celebrations and parting rituals conclude, families return home, awaiting another year for the chance to reunite with their loved ones again.

Significance

In Bolivia, death is viewed not as an end but as a continuation of life—a journey from which one can return. For the indigenous people, Día de los Muertos celebrates this eternal connection, offering a day each year for the living to reunite with the departed. If you find yourself in Bolivia during this time, be aware that many businesses close for the holiday, so it's wise to stock up on essentials in advance.

Dates

The celebration begins on October 31st and continues through November 2nd.
