Many people think that the Faroe Islands that are located so far in the North Atlantic ocean are bitterly cold during winter. But in fact, it’s warmer here than in many countries of continental Europe. Warm currents protect Faroe shores from freezing temperatures. January is one of the coldest months of the year here. You can expect 6°C (42°F) at Tórshavn at best. More likely it will be a few degrees colder, and in the mountains, it’s always colder than along the shore. Snow is very likely to fall in the mountains during January. But rain is more common on the coast. January is the wettest month of the year. It will rain for 22-26 days. The sunlight is virtually absent, and the sky is clouded all the time. Days are rather short, cold and wet. So make sure you pack the right clothes to spend some time outdoors. During this month you will need a good waterproof insulated jacket, insulated and waterproof hiking boots, a hat and a pair of gloves. Overall, January is not the best time to visit the islands in terms of weather. Hurricanes make struck the Faroe Islands during winter months. But it’s one of the best times to catch Northern Lights.

February is another cold month in the Faroe Islands with temperatures staying around freezing levels. It’s the coldest month of the year, but it’s not completely grey. There is one hour of sun this month. However, overall weather stays cold, cloudy and wet. The air in the coastal villages is usually a bit warmer than in the inner part. The mountains can have freezing temperatures at that time. Despite the stable temperatures, the weather can get dramatic in the Faroe Islands with strong wind and heavy rain. February is slightly drier than January, but there are still about 22 rainy days. Snow is much rarer than rain. So make sure to take some waterproof clothes and boots. February is not the best time to explore the nature of the Faroe Islands due to short days, rainfall and cold temperatures. However, it’s a good time to catch Northern Lights and see the Faroe Islands under snow.

There is some improvement in terms of daylight and sunshine, but unfortunately, it rains as much as in February. The chances to see Aurora Borealis are lower in March. Hiking is not available due to rain and cold. That makes March a not so good time to visit the Faroe Islands.
