Best Time To Visit Kallur Lighthouse
In summer, you're more likely to catch good weather, but at the same time, you'll have to deal with crowded ferries. In the off-season, you're more likely to encounter unstable weather, but you’ll avoid the crowds. However, the months from April to October are generally considered the best time to visit Kallur Lighthouse.
How To Get To Kallur Lighthouse
It's best to reserve a full day for a trip to Kallur Lighthouse, as it requires a bit of planning. Visitors must take a ferry, followed by a drive through narrow tunnels by car or bus, and lastly, an about hour-hike to reach Kallur.
The North Atlantic Ocean surrounds Kalsoy Island, and the only way to reach it is by taking a small ferry that departs from the town of Klaksvík on Borðoy Island. The first ferry from Klaksvík to Syðradalur leaves at 6:40 am on weekdays, 8 am on Saturdays, and 10 am on Sundays. The last regular departures back to Klaksvík are 6:30 pm on weekdays and 5:15 pm on weekends. A late departure from Syðradalur at 10:35 pm is available upon request by phone. Additionally, in the period from May 1 to August 31, the schedule undergoes some changes.
Next, you need to pass through four single-lane tunnels (20 minutes drive) and reach the most northern village on the iKalsoy Island, Trøllanes, where all hikes to the lighthouse start. Upon arriving in Trøllanes, most travelers park at the lot next to the public restroom before starting the hike.
The 1-mile (1.6 km) hike is fairly easy for most visitors in good health. However, it becomes much harder during the winter, as the snow covers the trail. After the hike, you'll be rewarded with spectacular scenery of the island Eysturoy and Streymoy and the Risin & Kellingin rock formations. The Kallur Lighthouse stands in a spectacular location where two ridges meet, making it a perfect focal point for capturing incredible photos of the area.
To reach the viewpoint where everyone takes the photo of the lighthouse with Borgarin mountain in the background, visitors must cross the northern ridge. This can be challenging for some due to the steep drops on both sides.
