Lake Sørvágsvatn (Lake Leitisvatn) in Faroe Islands 2023-2024
The largest lake in the Faroe Islands with an optical illusion
Best time: all year round
The view at a certain angle at Trælanípa creates an optical illusion, earning Lake Sørvágsvatn the nickname "the lake above the ocean." Also known as the "Floating Lake" and Lake Leitisvatn, it is located on Vágar Island. It is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, covering an area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilometers). This location remains one of the most famous scenic spots in the Faroe Islands.
The Sørvágsvatn's surroundings also include Trælanípa, a rock wall that rises 465 feet (142 m) above the sea. No less impressive is Bøsdalafossur waterfall, which is 98 feet (30 meters) high and flows directly from the lake into the Atlantic Ocean, making this a must-visit destination year-round.
Hiking
The hike to Bøsdalafossur takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. It is an easy pass with no significant elevation. The lake is located right beside Vagar airport, and you can access it by turning onto the road near the church in Miðvágur and following the signs to "Trælanípa/Bøsdalafossur."
Then, you will reach the main gate and reception, where travelers pay the required hiking fee. Please note that all visitors are required to check in there. An adult admission is about 200 kr, while kids (ages 0-14) have a free entrance.
The gravel path leads to the end of the lake. The vantage point from the Trælanípa cliff provides scenic views. You’ll see the lake in front of you and the wild North Atlantic Ocean just below. Along the shore, you can spot the sea stack Geituskoradrangur.
Kayaking
Another way to experience Lake Sørvágsvatn is to take an extraordinary route on a kayak. You can book a 3-hour tour, which starts from the stone houses near the village Miðvágur and goes to the end of the lake towards the ocean and Bøsdalafossur waterfall. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the silence in the middle of unspoiled landscapes. Affordable 3-hour Kayaking on Lake Above the Ocean costs $60. Alternatively, you can opt for the Unbelievable 6-Hour ‘Floating Lake’ Tour, offering a fully organized experience for $397.
