Epiphany and La Befana 2025 in Venice

On January 6th of every year Italians celebrate the 12th day of Christmas, locally known as Epiphany. On this day, it's rumored that the good witch La Befana delivers Christmas presents and treats to all of the children of Italy. The Venetians also celebrate the day with La Regatta, which is a boat race where the men all dress up as La Befana while racing through the Grand Canal.

Celebration Origins

The Epiphany feast is a cherished Christian holiday commemorating the arrival of the Three Wise Men—Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—at the manger of Baby Jesus. According to tradition, these Magi journeyed far, guided by the Star of Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This iconic moment is often represented in nativity scenes, known in Italy as "Presepe." Celebrated as a national holiday in Italy, Epiphany also marks the day of La Befana.

La Befana

La Befana, a beloved figure in Italian folklore, is depicted as a kind but peculiar old witch who travels by broomstick on the night of January 5th. She delivers sweet treats to well-behaved children, placing them in Christmas stockings left out before bedtime, while children who misbehave might find coal instead. This enchanting tradition brings joy to kids across Italy, who wake up on Epiphany morning to discover their stockings filled with goodies, adding a magical touch to the holiday season.

Befana Regatta

The Befana Regatta is a lively and unique event in Venice, featuring around 50 members of the city's oldest rowing club, Bucintoro, who dress as Befana and race traditional boats from S. Tomà to the iconic Rialto Bridge. While the competition is primarily for athletes, it draws a festive crowd of Venetian families who line the Grand Canal to cheer and sometimes even wager on the racers. The finish line is humorously marked by a giant stocking, symbolizing an Epiphany treat bag. The festivities typically begin at 8:30 am as the participants prepare at Magazzini del Sale alle Zattere, with the race starting around 9:30 am, creating an unforgettable spectacle for all who attend.
