Epiphany Cake (King Cake) in Portugal 2024-2025
A traditional Catholic holiday marked with a crown-shaped cake, dances and singing

The holiday is dedicated to the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the Three Kings. A traditional crown-shaped pie, called 'bolo rei' with dried fruit and a special bean inside is eaten during the celebration. Mind that if you have a bean in your slice, you will have to buy the cake for your friends and family next year. Epiphany is also time for Portuguese dances and traditional street songs called "as janeiras" or 'the January ones'.
