The Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp was founded in 1875 by George P. Colby, a well-known trance medium at that time. He went all over the United States with readings and seances and was often referred to as the "seer of spiritualism". Colby found a spot for his residence with the help of his spirit guide—an Indian named Seneca. With his directions, Colby eventually arrived at a place called the Blue Springs Landing, near Orange City, Florida, where he formed The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association.
Today, you can visit the old Spiritualist Camp and Colby Memorial Temple. There are also about five separate spiritualist groups drawing visitors' attention to this town. Over two dozen psychic mediums are permanent residents here. You can also meet mediums at the historic Cassadaga Hotel. The hotel rooms have no phones or TVs, and no hot water after ten o'clock so as to not interfere with spiritual pathways.
