Bullfighting in Mexico 2024-2025

Mexico remains one of few countries where this traditional entertainment is still legal, but it feels like it's to be banned soon

Dates: November–March

Mexican toreros are deemed the most reckless bullfighters ever. They torment animals, piercing their skin until the final sword pricks right into the heart of a prey. Despite all recent debates about unjustified cruelty towards animals, bullfights are still legal in Mexico and a few other countries.

Bullfighting Ban in Mexico City

In May 2022, a judge banned bullfighting in Mexico City, home to the world's largest bullring—Plaza México. However, in 2023, Mexico’s Supreme Court overturned the decision without providing any explanation for their arguments. Meanwhile, bullfight organizers argued that the ban infringed on their right to continue the 500-year tradition of bullfighting in the city.

Animal rights activists, represented by the organization Justicia Justa, argued that bullfights created an unhealthy environment by exposing Mexico City residents to violence and animal cruelty. According to Humane Society International, around 180,000 bulls are killed in bullfights worldwide every year. Since 2013, several of Mexico's 32 states have banned bullfighting. Additionally, bullfighting has also been forbidden in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.

Bullfighting Season

Bullfighting spreadі across the entire country, including Cancun and a number of other places. The season runs mainly during the dry months from November to March.

History of Bullfighting in Mexico

Bullfighting (Fiesta Brava) was brought to Mexico more than 500 years ago by the conquistadores. Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés watched some of the first bullfights in Mexico City in the 1520s. In 1567, Pope Pius V banned hosting or viewing of a bullfight under penalty of excommunication from the church. Later, popes weakened the decree due to the popularity of bullfighting in Europe.

According to Spanish custom, the fighting bulls' horns must remain sharp, and the animals must be in good health condition. First-class fighting bulls must weigh at least 1014 lbs (459 kg).
