On the first weekend of May, this small Venaco village turns into the Corsican cheese capital. Here, visitors can observe the work of farmhouse cheese producers and the traditions left by their ancestors. Taste great varieties of Corsican cheese and enjoy musical performances! This festival will bring you into the original local atmosphere of this mountain village.
Cheese competition
The main highlight of Fiera di u Casgiu is a regional competition of farm-produced Corsican cheeses. The contest takes place every year in several categories. The competition includes the selection of a regional jury, training courses, and tastings. It ends with an awards ceremony with prizes for cheese-makers who follow traditional production methods. The five cheese categories include: Bastelicacciu, Calenzana, Niulincu, Sartinesu, and Venachese.
Fiera di u Casgiu location
Located in Central Corsica, Venaco is nestled between Mont Rotondo and Mont Cardo. Set on the Vecchio River, the area boasts 16th-century and 18-th century churches and an old stone-paved road, built by Romans. Venaco is connectedto Bastia and Ajaccio by the departmental road 93 and a train. From mainland, the most convenient way to reach Venaco is by taking a ferry from Livorno and Bastia and then travel to the village by car for about two hours.
