Laytown Beach Races 2024 in Ireland

Check out the only officially approved beach horse race in Europe!

Dates: September 16, 2024

The first recorded strand race occurred in 1868, and the competition has been acknowledged as unique and breathtaking ever since. It is the only beach race that is under Turf Club imposed restrictions and thus is a safe place for the partakers. The race track is completely straight, almost flat, serving as a perfect venue for horse racing.

Race Program

The race is part of the Irish racing calendar and is an official Horse Racing Ireland meeting. In the past, the contestants ran straight along the beach, then had to turn around and run back. Nowadays, the races transformed into sprint races, with the track distance being six and seven furlongs (1320 and 1540 yards).

Tickets to Horse Racing

Tickets to Laytown Beach Races cost €15 for adults and €10 for seniors or students. Children under 16 can enter for free with an adult ticketholder, however, prior registration of the child is required.

Schedule & Times of the Race

The first race is set to begin at 4:35 pm, while the gates open at 2:30 pm.

Laytown Race Course

The race takes place on Laytown Race Course, which in turn is located on the shore of the Irish Sea. The course goes along the beach and overlooks the waters, offering a gorgeous landscape during the races. Spectators can watch the race from the bleachers set up at the beach. Laytown is situated approximately 27 miles (44 km) from Dublin and can be easily reached either by train or bus, which operate regularly. Limited parking is available at the venue.
