Although donkeys may be less exotic than, let's say, ostriches, they get a lot of attention at Lamu each year. Lamu is the oldest town of Kenya and is on an island just off the Kenyan coast. Little narrow streets are characterized by the wild fusion of Arabic and Swahili cultures. A lot of habits of the Arab culture are preserved here, and thus people avoid excessive drinking.
However, the highlight of the town is its donkey sanctuary, where homeless donkeys are looked after. Donkeys are the main city attraction. Every November, they participate in the race that takes them up to the old town. Come and cheer together with locals and witness the different sides of Kenya.
