Krampus in Brixen (Bressanone) 2024, Italy

On Krampusnacht the Christmas devil comes alive

Dates: December 5, 2024

In the Alps, Christmas is as much about tradition as it is about festivity. In South Tyrol, Krampus, a fearsome figure from Alpine folklore, makes his presence felt during the holiday season. On Krampusnacht, December 5th, men and women don elaborate Krampus costumes and parade through the snow-covered mountains. This "Christmas devil," depicted as a half-goat, half-demon creature, is said to punish naughty children, while St. Nicholas, known locally as "San Nicolò," rewards the well-behaved. Over the years, Krampus has gained significant popularity in South Tyrol, and towns like Brixen (Bressanone) host particularly vibrant celebrations of this unique tradition.
