Krampus in Slovenia 2024-2025

Naughty children have to face Santa's evil alter ego

Dates: November–December

Slovenian children grow up terrified of Krampus, also known as Parklji. Half-goat half-demon with horns and cloven hooves is an Alpine folklore character, originating from winter solstice rituals in pre-Christian times. Christianity didn't succeed in eliminating Krampus, but rather integrated him into Christmas celebrations. Krampus had become an evil counterpart of St. Nicholas. The monster chases and punishes naughty children with a whip or gives them coals lumps instead of presents. Up to this day, you can see Krampuses lurking on the streets during the Advent season in November or December. Krampus runs take place annually near Ljubljana, Maribor, and in some villages in the Julian Alps.

Krampus in Ljubljana (late November 2024)

The village of Goricane, located 8 mi (13 km) northwest of Ljubljana, is famous for its annual Krampus (Parkelj) Run. The parade, which starts in the village center at 6 pm, features several floats and over 600 Krampuses from five countries: Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Germany. The characters wear scary masks, animal furs and carry whips or sticks. Their terrifying march surely sends shivers down the spines of local children! The parade, which has been held for over ten years, attracts thousands of visitors. After the show, attendees and participants entertain themselves with some music and merrymaking.

Krampus Bread (Parkeljni)

Krampus bread is another beloved Slovenian Christmas tradition. Despite the terrifying appearance of the demon, Krampus bread is adored by kids. It's sweet, milky, and simply delicious. Families love to make these cookies at home with kids, who can surely get creative decorating them. The monster's eyes are often made of raisins or candy, and the long pointed tongue is made from red paper or chili pepper. Many local stores and bakeries start selling Parkeljni in late November or early December. Don't hesitate to try this sweet symbol of the Advent!
