Krampus in Sterzing (Vipiteno) 2024, Italy

Traditional spine-chilling figure of South Tyrol's Christmas season

Dates: December 5, 2024

In the Alps, Christmas extends beyond the usual lights and gifts to include dramatic traditions like the Krampus parades in South Tyrol. On December 5th, known as Krampusnacht, men and women don elaborate Krampus costumes—fearsome figures that combine elements of goat and demon. This annual event, held on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, is a vivid tribute to the "Christmas devil" from Alpine folklore. While Krampus is said to punish naughty children, St. Nicholas, or "San Nicolò," rewards the well-behaved. The tradition has grown in popularity, with towns like Sterzing (Vipiteno) hosting particularly vibrant celebrations.

Each year, on December 5th, Sterzing (Vipiteno) hosts a dramatic St. Nicholas parade, known as "Tuifltog," starting at 6 pm. The parade begins in the north of the historic center, moves through the old town and town square, and continues past the Twelve-Apostles Tower into the new town. During the event, St. Nicholas, accompanied by Servant Rupprecht and the Moors, distributes gifts, while the "Tuifl" (Krampus) maintain order with their rods, creating a bit of mischief and adding to the festive atmosphere. Originally, this tradition was intended to ward off spirits of darkness and frost. In addition to the parade, St. Nicholas makes house visits in the afternoon, also accompanied by the Tuifl. This event is one of the most spectacular St. Nicholas celebrations in South Tyrol and the entire Alpine region.
