Ponte alla Luna (Bridge to the Moon) in Italy 2025
Suspension bridges connect two peaks in Sasso di Castalda
Best time: all year round (best April–November)
Ponte alla Luna, or Bridge to the Moon, is an adrenaline-boosting attraction in the Basilicata region in Southern Italy, famous for its rugged terrain. The series of the longest and most spectacular Tibetan bridges in Italy form a 1000-ft (300-m) adventure path in the village of Sasso di Castaldo, which belongs to the province of Potenza.
Suspension bridges connect two peaks in the Apennines of Basilicata. The main bridges are hanging at a distance of 400 feet (120 m) over the creek and jagged cliffs. The name "Ponte alla Luna" honors an engineer and the director of the Apollo program Rocco Petrone, whose parents were from Sasso di Castalda.
Crossing the bridge is not for the faint of heart. It takes at least 30 minutes but may even take up to an hour for some. At the end of the bridge, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views from a glass platform, showcasing the beauty of the historic village Sasso di Castalda.
On weekends and holidays, the bridge operates from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:30 pm to 6 pm. It's also possible to cross the bridge on a weekday if you make a reservation. The best time for this attraction is from April to November. In the winter, there's a high chance of inclement weather, such as rain, snow, or frost.
