Events

The Vernon Winter Carnival is packed with exciting highlights, including the BC Championship Snow Sculpture Competition at Silver Star Mountain Resort, showcasing impressive snow masterpieces created in real-time. The event also features the Polar Bear Swim at Paddlewheel Beach, the Total Fun Bed Races, and the Carnival of Chocolate. Visitors can enjoy free skating at the Outdoor Centennial Rink and take part in activities like the Gold Rush Scavenger Hunt, Retro Ride Day, Winter Carnival 1 Mile Race, and Disco Laser Light Boogie. Hot Air Balloon Festival & Balloon Glow (February 7, 2025)

One of the most beloved events at the Vernon Winter Carnival is the Hot Air Balloon Festival and Balloon Glow. Set in the Kal Tire Place North Parking Lot, pilots and their crews set up massive hot air balloons, creating a stunning display of light on the dark winter evening. Visitors can get up close to the balloons, meet the pilots, and capture memorable photos. The event also features food trucks offering delicious dinner options, a games corner with fun activities, and a vendor market, all under the enchanting glow of the balloons. The event runs from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Winter Carnival Parade (February 8, 2025)

The 65th Annual Winter Carnival Parade will be held on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, with a "Back to the 80s" theme. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best 80s attire and join the festivities. The parade, which runs from 12 pm to 1 pm, is a beloved community event. Spectators can vote for their favorite entry online.

History of Vernon Winter Carnival

The first Winter Carnival in Vernon took place on Long Lake (Kalamalka Lake) on February 23, 1893. It was recognized as the first event of its kind to be held on ice in British Columbia. At the time, the area had around 10,000 residents, and the event drew a crowd that was impressive for its size. The modern Vernon Winter Carnival, as we know it today, was first held from January 27 to February 5, 1961, marking the beginning of a long-running tradition of winter celebrations in the region.
