In the past, chestnuts played a major part in the Tuscan diet. Don't hesitate to try “caldarroste” or roasted chestnuts and chestnut cake—castagnaccio. It's often called a poor man's cake and is made with chestnut flour. Hot chestnuts are the main street food of autumn.

All chestnut foods are available at festivals held throughout the region. Particularly, the chestnut fever embraces the areas of Florence, Siena, Arezzo, and Massa. The festivals take place during October which is the main chestnut harvest month. The season continues into early November.
