The festivities begin with a spectacular parade of over 500 participants marching the streets in colorful costumes. Afterwards, competitors get ready for a brute fight. The two rival teams Mezzogiomo and Tramontana represent different areas of the city of Pisa in Tuscany. Each team pushes an iron cart set in the center of the Ponte di Mezzo—the central bridge across the Arno river. The aim is to move the cart to the rival's territory and conquer the bridge. Although the game of the bridge takes place for just one day, the competitors have to train for this severe battle for the entire year.
This historical tradition takes place annually on the last Saturday of June.
