Almonds were a big part of Portugal's economy in the past. And even though now it's not as profitable as it used to be, Portugal remains among top almond producers in Europe. Nuts harvesting is not complicated so visitors can easily take part. Farmers with long poles simply knock the nuts from the branches.
In Algarve region, almonds are widely used to cook cakes and confectionary so don't forget to try delicious local specialties.
