Dates: September 15-16, 2024
Join the celebrations of the birth of Prophet Mohammed in the oldest Swahili settlement on the Lamu island. This is one of the most unique places with rich history and spectacular celebrations.
Maulidi Celebration
There are thousands of Muslims attending the Lamu Maulidi celebrations from Kenya and other parts of East Africa, the Middle East, and other countries. The three-day festival concludes the month-long Maulid celebration. The festival features poetry readings, music and dance, calligraphy and art exhibitions, dhow and donkey races, swimming competitions, and a parade (or zeffe).
On the last day of the celebration, men gather at the city cemetery, where they pray quietly. After that, the parade (zeffe) begins, and men walk through the city holding hands. It is common for festivities to begin in the afternoon when it is cool.
