Polar Circle Marathon 2024 in Greenland
The coolest marathon on Earth
Dates: October 26–27, 2024
If a usual marathon isn't extreme enough, you definitely should try this variation in Greenland. It's called the Polar Circle Marathon, and it's far more demanding and challenging than a usual marathon because of the cold temperatures and the slippery surfaces. The Polar Circle Marathon is held annually in October in Kangerlussuaq, West Greenland.
It's also probably one of the most spectacular marathons in the world with the route going through tundra, moraine landscapes, glaciers, Arctic deserts, and with some parts even going over the actual ice cap. If you're lucky, and the weather is beautiful and sunny, the scenery will look even better with sparkling snow and frozen blue lakes and glaciers.
Race distances
The event offers two distances: the Full Marathon (42.2 km) and the Half Marathon (21.1 km). Both races take place on consecutive days and share the first part of the course. Runners can choose to participate in the marathon on Saturday or the half marathon on Sunday, or they can take on both distances by joining the Polar Bear Challenge, which combines the 42.2 km marathon with the 21.1 km half marathon. The time limit for the half marathon is 4 hours, while the marathon has a 7-hour time limit.
Registration Fee
All international runners must sign up for the tour package. The 5-Day Package costs 2,295 EUR and includes five days of accommodation and activities. Alternatively, Option 2 offers travel packages that include flights.
Clothing Tips
Shoe spikes are mandatory for running on the ice. Remember to bring sunglasses and warm thermal clothing. Layers are essential for a successful race, helping you stay dry and warm throughout.
