Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park 2025
Smaller than Arizona's Grand Canyon, though no less impressive stretching for more than 30 km
Best time: April–October
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone formed over 10,000 years ago. Erosion caused by various natural forces, like water and wind, created this impressive formation. It is around 32 km long, from 457 to 1219 m wide, and about 243-366 m deep. The feeling of being so tiny among this tremendous natural creation will certainly stick with you.
The canyon is dyed in various colors, mainly white, pink, and red. The color appears due to the amount of water and iron in the walls of the canyon and various chemical processes in the rocks.
Although it is younger and smaller than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, nevertheless it has lots of breathtaking spots. One of the most remarkable features in this area is the river that runs through it. The river itself is around 300 m deep and is the longest undammed river that stretches for 965 km through Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. It is one of the most popular hiking areas in the park. Another breathtaking feature is the waterfalls of the canyon, especially the Lower Falls.
You can marvel at the views on the canyon from different scenic areas, like Lookout Point, Red Rock Point, and lots of spots along the South Rim Trail. Each of these allows you to see the canyon from different perspectives. There are lots of different trails with fascinating views from both sides of the canyon. In the Canyon Village, you can find a visitors center, a lodge, and several dining places.
