History of Carrera Chirripó
The first edition of the Chirripó International Cultural Ecological Cross Country Race took place in 1989. Only 100 runners were allowed to participate, and Faustino Villarevia Ureña won the inaugural race from Herradura de Rivas. He completed the challenging 34 km (21.1 miles) route in an impressive time of 3 hours, 42 minutes, and 9 seconds. This event has since grown in popularity and remains one of the most demanding races in Costa Rica.
