Every June, dozens of nude riders from different cities and countries take to the French Quarter of New Orleans for the annual World Naked Bike Ride. This fun extravaganza is held to raise awareness of bicycling and to declare the beauty of the human body, both individual and vulnerable. The overall aim is to promote cycling as a clean and safe means of transportation versus motorized vehicles, which have a negative impact on the environment and global oil dependency.
Location and Route
The World Naked Bike Ride starts at Mickey Markey Park, located at the intersection of Royal and Piety streets. While the exact route has not been officially disclosed, tradition dictates that the ride typically heads upriver toward the bustling French Quarter before circling back to its starting point.
Rules of the Ride
Participants aren't required to ride only bikes. It could be anything ranging from rollerbladers to skateboarders and even joggers, but obviously not a motorized car. The organizers call on participants not to be discouraged if they're unwilling to undress completely, as the motto clearly states—"as bare as you dare." Hundreds of cyclists participating in the annual WNBR add some special features and create their unique style by ornating their bodies and vehicles; they are adorned in strategically placed Speedos, body paint, and purple Crown Royal bags.
