Although the holiday is a religious one and most loud bars and alcohol shops get closed, it is a remarkable peaceful time. Buddhists all over the Kingdom make offerings and participate in family gatherings. There is also a beautiful ceremony performed by the monks. Each year they light thousands of lamps and candles around the temples, making it a truly warm scene. The holiday is set according to the lunar calendar, therefore there are no set dates, but it most often falls in May or June.
Some of the best places to experience Visakha Bucha Day celebrations are Wat Phra Kaew temple in Bangkok, Phutthamonthon in Nakhon Pathom, and Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai.
