A beautiful and heart-warming tradition takes place in the Bang Phli district of the Samut Prakan Province, shining a different light on Thai culture. The Rub Bua Festival, also known as the Lotus-Throwing Festival consists of numerous sacred religious customs, involving majestic lotus flowers. The area is famous for its vast quantity of lotus flowers. Taking place on the full moon night during eleventh Thai lunar month, the festivities brings local community together in a remarkable display of faith.
Customs
Locals and pilgrims from all over the country gather at Wat Bang Phli Yai Nai to pay respects to the golden statue of Luang Pho To. People pray and rub golden leaves over this majestic statue, which signifies showing respect and gratitude for Buddha's teachings. The temple grounds transform into bustling fairgrounds, with numerous vendors selling street food and souvenirs.
Buddha Boat Procession
The main tradition takes place the next morning. Local people who live near Wat Klong Samrong, the waters of Samut Prakan Province. gather at the closest river banks, waiting to witness a procession carrying statues of Buddha. People standing ashore then throw the lotus flowers, aiming for the boat.
Schedule
The event begins at approximately 7 am, but spectators gather on the river banks as early as 4 am. The entire festivals takes place across nine days, with each day featuring numerous market stalls, amusement attractions, and food court.
