Sigtunarännet 2024 in Sweden
Follow the old Viking route on skates together with a crowd of enthusiasts like yourself
Dates: February 18, 2024 (canceled)
Sigtunarännet is an annual long-distance skating event held every February in Sigtuna, connecting Uppsala and Stockholm. The race is often referred to as an old Viking route. Known as Sweden's largest skating race on natural lake ice, it is primarily an exercise-focused event with participants choosing between distances of 31 miles (50 km) or 15.5 miles (25 km).
Location
Sigtuna Stad, Sweden's hub for cross-country skating, lies by Lake Mälaren, just 7 miles (11 km) from Arlanda, 23 miles (37 km) from Stockholm, and 17 miles (27 km) from Uppsala. Beyond Mälaren, numerous nearby lakes offer prime skating opportunities.
2025 Edition
Unfortunately, the 2024 edition of Sigtunarännet was canceled at a late stage due to safety concerns. According to the organizers, ensuring participant safety is their top priority, and they could not guarantee it this year, leading to the decision to call off the race. While the cancellation disappointed both the organizers and eager participants, they aim to hold the event in 2025, though no updates have been confirmed yet. Rove.me will keep you posted on announcements for plans regarding this iconic race.
Safety Measures
Sigtunarännet is often canceled due to safety concerns, as participant safety is a top priority. When the race cannot proceed, organizers host an Ice Party at the start and finish area. Registered participants receive coffee, buns, blueberry soup, a hat, and a seat mat. While the official event may be canceled, participants can still skate at their own risk, provided they have proper equipment and take necessary precautions.
Sigtuna Stad: What to See
Visitors can explore historical sites like churches, ruins, castles, and crofter villages, along with Sweden's smallest town hall and its largest airport. Stroll along Stora Gatan, Sweden's oldest pedestrian street, established in 970 when Sigtuna was founded. Today, over a millennium later, Sigtuna remains an international meeting place, thanks to its history and proximity to Arlanda Airport.
