Gothenburg, the second city in Sweden by population, is known for its vibrant cultural and food scene. Located on the west coast in southwestern Sweden, the city is a great Christmas destination with several holiday markets worth visiting.
Liseberg Christmas Market (November 18–December 30,2023, weekends)
Liseberg Amusement Park is the major attraction in Gothenburg. During Christmas, it hosts one of the largest and oldest Christmas markets in Sweden. Liseberg Julmarknad is attended by 500,000 people annually. From mid-November, Liseberg looks like a real winter wonderland adorned with thousands of Christmas lights, surrounded with plenty of cozy fire pits, and stalls offering hot chocolate, waffles, toffee apples, mulled wine, roasted nuts, and knitted socks. Entertainment includes Santa’s workshop in Lapland, carol singers, arcades, amusement rides, hot chocolates, and Christmas carols.
Haga Christmas Market (November 25–December 17, 2023, weekends)
Haga Christmas Market is an atmospheric and traditional holiday fair, taking place in the “old town” Gothenburg. Haga Nyga Street is lined with cozy stalls, offering souvenirs, arts, crafts, and Christmas delicacies. Swing by to try the famous giant cinnamon and saffron buns, as well as candied apples, and other sweet delights.
Kronhuset Christmas Market (November 26–December 23, 2023, unconfirmed)
Kronhuset, also known as Gothenburg's Arsenal, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. During the festive Jul season, Knonhuset hosts a traditional Christmas markets and a popular St. Lucia parade. The market, set in the historic heart of Gothenburg, takes place during 4 Advent weekends and features handmade gifts from local artisans and craftsmen. Stalls are located both inside and outside, on the Kronhusgården. Visitors can also sip some mulled wine and try Swedish holiday foods.
