The Arashiyama Hanatouro Festival, an annual event in Kyoto, transforms the Arashiyama district into a stunningly illuminated landscape each December, typically over ten days around mid-month.
Hours & Locations
This year, it’s expected to run from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM each evening, illuminating areas like the iconic Bamboo Grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Katsura River, and several nearby temples and shrines, with many attractions staying open later than usual.
Highlights of the Festival
One of the festival’s highlights is the path lined with lanterns along the Bamboo Forest behind Tenryuji Temple, where the bamboo trees glow with a green light, creating a peaceful, dreamlike setting. The Togetsukyo Bridge, beautifully lit and often mirrored in the Katsura River, is another must-see spot, reflecting the lights in the water for a captivating view. The illuminated paths and riverside add to the festival’s appeal, drawing visitors to experience the tranquility of Kyoto's winter nights.
Events
In addition to the lights, local businesses extend their hours, offering seasonal foods, traditional crafts, and souvenirs. Cultural performances also take place, such as traditional music and dance, with some tea houses and temples hosting tea ceremonies. This mix of lights, culture, and winter festivities makes the Arashiyama Hanatouro a unique celebration of Kyoto’s heritage.
