This Memorial Day Weekend is a perfect occasion to leave the city and head to the beach to welcome summer and soak up the sun. However, if you choose to stay in Houston, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate, starting from patriotic ceremonies, honoring men and women in the armed forces who gave their lives for America, to music festivals, BBQ cookouts, and street parties.
The Houston National Cemetery Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony (May 27, 2024)
The annual Commemoration Ceremony at Houston National Cemetery takes place at 9 am on Memorial Day. The ceremony, honoring America’s fallen service members. features speeches from renowned community members, veterans, former prisoners of war (POW), and Purple Heart recipients. Houston National Cemetery, with more than 111,000 interments, occupies 419 acres in northwest Houston. The Hemicycle, a large semi-circular monument at the cemetery is the most visible structure on the surrounding landscape.
Memorial Day Ceremony at Bear Creek Pioneers Park (May 27, 2024)
The war memorial at Bear Creek Park hosts an annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Harris County War Memorial, which was built in 1985 to honor servicemen and women who lost their lives in World War I and other wars. Each Memorial Day, the public pays respects to those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.The monument honors those who fought in World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Memorial Day Festival at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (May 27, 2024)
Memorial Day is always special at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, dedicated to the history of Buffalo Soldiers and African American soldiers in the United States Military. From 10 am to 4 pm, the museum offers special exhibits, including the new Blue Helmets display, tours, photos with troopers, and Living History performances each hour. Plenty of family-friendly activities will be available at the Plaza in front of the museum. An Artifact Talk with BSNM’s Archivist Jason Fung, who will explore the theme of emancipation through artifacts, will start at 11 am. Free admission to the museum is possible with registration.
Memorial Day Music Fest At Lagoonfest (May 26-27, 2024)
Memorial Day Weekend is a great time to visit LagoonFest Texas, Houston's waterfront getaway. White sand beaches and crystal clear waters are made for relaxation! In addition, Lagoonfest offers special attractions, live music, delicious food, and entertainment. Visitors can enjoy live music acts from talented artists starting from 10 am.
Comicpalooza (May 24-26, 2024)
Comicpalooza is the annual pop culture convention held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. This massive event is dedicated to comic books, fantasy, sci-fi, anime, gaming, literature, cosplay, TV, and more. The inaugural Comicpalooza was held on July 19, 2008, as a singing event dedicated to the release of “The Dark Knight.”
Bachata Sensual Festival Houston (May 23-27, 2024)
Bachata Sensual Festival Houston is a celebration of Latin culture and bachata. The festival features music, dance lessons, performances, and fantastic dance parties. The festival takes place at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel. The public can expect a diverse DJ lineup, stunning performances every night, world-class MCs and entertainment, live concerts, pool parties, and intensive workshops.
Family Overnight on Memorial Day Weekend at Space Center Houston (May 25-26, 2024)
The Family Overnight Program at Space Center Houston could possibly be the best camping experience in your life! A unique overnight camping experience allows you to set up your tent under a twice-flown Falcon 9 rocket or in Independence Plaza, or underneath a Boeing 747, the shuttle carrier aircraft NASA 905. Participants can also use sleeping bags and pillows to arrange a campsite indoors, surrounded by spaceflight artifacts. The event also features exciting, hands-on STEM activities, dinner and breakfast served at Space Center Houston, and a second-day visit to Space Center Houston. The cost is $79.95 per person.
