Traditional festive drink, served hot from a bowl


Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional alcoholic drink for New Year's Eve or Christmas celebration. The popularity of the drink originates from a comedy film of 1944. The drink is prepared in a bowl from a heated red wine with cinnamon sticks, anise star, orange peels, and cloves. Then a special metal grate, Feuerzange, is put on the top of the bowl, where sugarloaf, soaked with rum, is set on fire. The sugar melts and mixes with wine. The ceremony of preparing this drink is very important. It gathers together lots of people celebrating and having fun.
