According to the legend, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura which is why the main events and celebrations are centered in this city, about 60 km from Agra. The holiday begins in the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple at the exact spot where Krishna was born with the ceremony of priests bathing and chanting mantras. At midnight, an hour after Krishna's birth, pilgrims come into the temple, jostling each other to get a view of the idol and shouting praise to the lord.

Lord Krishna's birthday is celebrated on the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon, according to the Hindu calendar, typically falling in July, August, or September. This year, the celebration will take place on August 26.

Mathura occupies a prominent place in Indian history and culture, having served as a vibrant hub for Brahmanism, Buddhism, and Jainism for many decades in Uttar Pradesh. The city's culture, encompassing art, religion, and festivals, is renowned worldwide. The Shri Krishna Janambhoomi Temple, situated next to the Kesava Deo Temple and the Shahi Eid Gah Mosque, stands as a testament to this rich heritage. Photography is banned inside the complex by the government. Originally built by King Vajra and later rebuilt by Vikramaditya, the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt 17 times throughout its history. Today, it remains one of the most frequently visited temples in India.
