Agra’s residents mark the birth of Krishna with a variety of lively traditions and ceremonial practices. One of them is Janmashtami, which is celebrated according to the Hindu calendar in August or September.
According to the legend, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura which is why the main events and celebrations are centered in this city, about 60 km from Agra. The holiday begins in the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple at the exact spot where Krishna was born with the ceremony of priests bathing and chanting mantras.
At midnight, an hour after Krishna's birth, pilgrims come into the temple jostling each other to get a view of the idol and shouting praise the lord.
