Purnama Kedasa 2025 in Bali

The full moon celebration is one of the most significant holidays for the Balinese Hindus

Dates: April 12, 2025

Purnama Kedasa is a significant Balinese celebration that occurs after the full moon. It is a deeply spiritual and cultural event in which locals gather to honor the moon and participate in various rituals. The celebration combines aspects of Balinese Hinduism, animism, ancestor worship, and a deep respect for nature. On this day, Balinese Hindus offer offerings and pray, acknowledging the moon's powerful presence in their lives.

Traditional Celebrations

The Purnama Kedasa ceremony is a significant event for Balinese Hindus. It is held annually on the full moon during the tenth month of the Balinese calendar, Sasih Kedasa. Devotees gather at the Besakih Temple, Bali's mother temple, to participate in the 'Betara Turun Kabeh' ceremony, which invites gods and deified ancestors to bless the people and the land. The full moon symbolizes female energy, and this period is a time for spiritual renewal and purification.

Locals offer fresh food, fruits, and colorful flowers at temples and homes and perform rituals like bathing in holy water to cleanse, burning incense to ward off evil spirits, and using flower petals and rice grains. Prior to the ceremony, devotees participate in the 'Melasti' purification pilgrimage, carrying sacred temple objects to sanctified water sources. T32 priests lead the ceremony, which attracts thousands of Hindu devotees from across Bali and Indonesia who express gratitude for blessings of safety, health, and prosperity.
