Trdelník

One tasty symbol of both Christmas and snowy winter days is Trdelník. This is a traditional cake and sweet pastry made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick and grilled. It is usually topped with a sugar and walnut mix. Trdelník is very popular among tourists, especially when the weather is getting colder and is best enjoyed with a hot drink.

The original recipe was brought to Skalica at the end of the 18th century. Later on, the recipe was improved by the inhabitants of Skalica. The name trdelník comes from trdlo, a special wooden tool used for pounding or stamping materials. The pastry is put around such a tool which gives it its traditional hollow shape.
