Broadway 2025 in New York

The heart of theater production and the Big Apple's main attraction

Dates: January 21–February 9, 2025 | All year round

On The Town. Lyric Theatre.

Broadway is one of the first things that pop into your head when you think of New York. It's very popular among both tourists and locals. Almost every young actor dreams of getting a part in a Broadway show one day.

More Than Just a Street

The term "Broadway" holds special significance, as it refers both to a profession and a location: the theater industry and a major street running the length of Manhattan. While this may be clear to a New Yorker, many visitors don't realize the connection until they've stood on the sidewalks of Broadway. To add to the confusion, not all Broadway shows are performed on Broadway itself, and some shows staged on this iconic street are categorized as "off-Broadway."

Highlights

Broadway includes 40 theaters with more than 500 seats each and is considered to perform some of the best shows in the world. Most of the productions on Broadway are musicals. Some of them, like Cats, Hairspray, Chicago, and Phantom of the Opera, have become real legends.

Longest-Running Shows

The longest-running Broadway show is The Phantom of the Opera, which has staged over 12,000 performances since its debut on January 26, 1988. However, the title of longest-running musical in New York City belongs to the off-Broadway show The Fantasticks, which first opened in 1960 and ran until 2002 with 17,162 performances. After reopening in 2006, the combined runs have made it a fixture of the New York theater scene for over 50 years.

Other long-running shows include the 1996 revival of Chicago, The Lion King, which has been performed since 1997, and Les Misérables, which opened in 1987, closed in 2003, and has been revived twice since then.

Best Time to Experience

Broadway in New York offers a year-round experience, with each season bringing its unique appeal. Fall and spring are ideal for mild weather and exciting new show debuts, while winter brings a festive atmosphere with holiday-themed performances.

A highlight is NYC Broadway Week, typically held in January and September, with the next edition running from January 21 through February 9, offering discounted tickets for select shows.
